DESCRIPTION

The Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was founded in 1970 out of an aspiration to uphold the Malay language as a language of knowledge. In 2006 it was appointed as one of four research universities in Malaysia due to its background in quality research as well as receiving the Prime Minister’s Quality Award.

The university attracts more than19,000 students with 12% of these being international students and is in possession of one of the largest university libraries in Malaysia. Students have access to a collection of over 2 million books, journals and online content.

UKM invites APAIE 2019 delegates to a campus tour of the university’s facilities which include:

  • Advanced Surgical Skills Centre (ASSC)
The ASSC is equipped with the latest technology in minimally invasive surgery making it the first such training centre of such magnitude in the ASEAN region. With ASSC in operation to its full potential, Malaysia is on track to become a hub for training doctors in the region in cutting edge advanced surgical technology especially in the field of minimally invasive surgery.
  • Tissue Engineering Centre (TEC)
Recognised by the Ministry of Education as a centre of excellence in research in 2008. It is a reference centre for tissue engineering and regenerative research in Malaysia and neighbouring countries. The centre is devoted to exploring the capability of translating tissue engineering and regenerative medicine into new medical therapies.
  • UKM Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI)
UMBI was formed in July 2003 as one of the strategies by the university to enhance research in molecular medicine. UMBI is focusing on cancer biomarkers and has key laboratories providing platform technologies and analysis in genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics. UMBI is currently spearheading The Malaysian Cohort project which is a top-down national project focused on identifying risk factors and discovering biomarkers for various diseases including cancers. UMBI has forged collaboration with many international researchers and research institutions.
